Current expert testing also supports treating directional audio as a distinct criterion rather than simply using overall sound quality. Tom's Hardware, for example, says its wireless-headset testing specifically considers detailed, directional audio, low latency, microphone quality, and comfort.
Audeze Maxwell 2
If directional accuracy and overall audio quality were my highest priorities, the Audeze Maxwell 2 would be one of the first headsets I would try.
The Maxwell 2 uses 90mm planar magnetic drivers, which is unusual compared with the dynamic drivers used by most gaming headsets. Its main attraction isn't a collection of gaming gimmicks; it is the quality and detail of the audio itself.
That matters for positional audio.

What Actually Makes a Headset Good for Directional Sound?
This is where I think many gaming-headset recommendations become misleading.
A headset doesn't become good at positional audio simply because the manufacturer writes:
“360° Spatial Audio”
on the box.
There are several different characteristics involved.
Imaging
Imaging is probably the most important one.
It describes how accurately a headset allows you to perceive the position of a sound.
A headset with good imaging should make it easier to distinguish:
- left from right
- front from back
- near from far
- sometimes above from below
For competitive FPS games, this can be more useful than having an enormous soundstage.
Soundstage
Soundstage describes the perceived size and spatial presentation of the audio.
A large soundstage can be enjoyable, but large doesn't automatically mean accurate.
A headset can create a very wide presentation while still making it difficult to determine exactly where a footstep originated.
That's why I would prioritize imaging over the marketing phrase “immersive sound.”

Can I accurately tell where the sound is coming from?
